Understanding Ideal Weight Formulas

There is no single "perfect" weight for any given height — that is why this calculator uses four established medical formulas to give you a range. Each formula was developed in a different context and may suit different body types. The Devine formula (1974) is the most widely used in clinical settings for drug dosing. Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) provide updated estimates, while Hamwi (1964) is one of the earliest and simplest.

Frame Size Adjustment

Body frame size affects ideal weight. A person with a large frame naturally carries more bone and muscle mass than someone with a small frame at the same height. This calculator adjusts the formula results by approximately ±10 % for small and large frames, providing a more realistic target.

BMI-Based Range

The BMI healthy weight range (18.5–24.9 kg/m²) is included as an additional reference. While BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, it remains a useful screening tool. For a complete picture, consider combining these results with body fat percentage and waist circumference measurements.
