What are readability scores?
Readability scores measure how easy or difficult a piece of text is to read. They use mathematical formulas based on word length, sentence length, and syllable count to estimate the education level needed to understand your writing. Writers, educators, and marketers use these scores to ensure their content matches their target audience's reading ability.
Understanding the formulas
The Flesch Reading Ease score ranges from 0 to 100 β higher means easier to read. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level maps directly to US school grade levels. The Gunning Fog Index estimates years of formal education needed. The Coleman-Liau Index uses character counts instead of syllables. The SMOG Index focuses on polysyllabic words, and the Automated Readability Index uses character and word counts.
