Understanding profit margin, markup, and pricing

A profit margin calculator helps you express profit as a percentage of revenue or selling price — the figure investors and operators often mean when they say “margin.” A gross margin calculator typically uses revenue minus cost of goods sold, while product-level margin often uses selling price minus unit cost. Our first modes focus on that per-unit view; the operating margin tab layers in operating expenses for a wider business snapshot.

Margin vs markup

Margin is profit divided by selling price (or revenue). Markup is profit divided by cost. They answer different questions: margin ties to what you keep per pound of sales; markup ties to how much you add on top of cost. Searching for margin vs markup usually boils down to this denominator difference — the same pound profit yields a higher markup % than margin % when cost is below price.

Formulas this tool uses

  • Profit = Selling price − Cost price
  • Profit margin % = (Profit ÷ Selling price) × 100
  • Markup % = (Profit ÷ Cost price) × 100
  • Selling price from target margin % = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin÷100), for margin as % of selling price and margin < 100%
  • Gross profit = Revenue − COGS; Operating profit = Revenue − COGS − Operating expenses
  • Gross / operating margin % = (Respective profit ÷ Revenue) × 100

Net profit calculator note

Real net profit may subtract tax, interest, and non-operating items. With only revenue, COGS, and operating expenses, net profit (pre-tax) matches operating profit in this simplified business profit calculator. Use the numbers as a planning aid and confirm with your accountant or finance system for statutory reporting.
