How to use this fraction calculator
Enter the numerator and denominator for each fraction, select an operation (+, −, ×, ÷), and press Calculate. The fraction calculator returns the answer as a simplified fraction, a decimal, and a mixed number. A step-by-step solution shows exactly how the result was derived, making it ideal for homework and learning.
How fraction arithmetic works
To add or subtract fractions, find a common denominator, adjust numerators, then combine. To multiply fractions, multiply numerators together and denominators together. To divide fractions, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second. The result is always reduced to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor (GCD).
Mixed numbers
When the absolute value of the numerator exceeds the denominator, the result is also shown as a mixed number (e.g., 7/4 → 1 ¾). This is useful for practical measurements and everyday contexts.
